EMDR

Do you find certain memories or events still bother you? Do you experience strong emotions like fear, anger, shame or guilt linked to things that have happened in your life?

EMDR can be an effective therapy to help reprocess such memories and experiences so that they don't continue to cause so much distress. EMDR  was developed in 1987 and since then has been supported by research to be an effective therapy. It uses eye movements and other bi-lateral stimulation (such as sounds or hand tapping) to help the brain re-process difficult memories to make them less impactful.

Examples of situations EMDR might be able to help with are:

  • Difficult experiences at work

  • Traumatic experiences in life (for example a car crash, or being the victim of a crime)

  • Difficult medical experiences

  • Bullying

  • Panic linked to past experiences

  • PTSD

As of March 2026 I will be able to offer EMDR, initially as a trainee and then as a qualified practitioner.  Whilst I am in training I am offering sessions at a lower cost of £35.

About Trauma

A common question asked is whether something 'qualifies' as trauma. Trauma is a term that is used widely, but with often with little clarification of the meaning.

Essentially a traumatic experience is something that happens, which we then experience as frightening, extremely stressful or out of our control. Not everyone will respond the same way to a trauma, and some people experience traumatic incidents and recover without any intervention. For others, however, there may be some distressing symptoms that follow the incident. These could be things such as flashbacks, anxiety, nightmares, low mood, anger, or sleep issues to name just a few.

If this is something you would like to learn more about, Mind has a good page which talks about the different types of trauma we can experience, and also how it might impact us: What is Trauma?
